Bradford ramblers are marking their 110th anniversary with an Edwardian dress event.

In the summer of 1903 members of the newly founded Bradford CHA (Countrywide Holidays Association) met in Malham village in the Yorkshire Dales for an inaugural ramble to Malham Tarn and back.

On Sunday, August 11, to celebrate 110 years since the club was founded, members will dress in the style worn by the ramblers on the 1903 outing to repeat the walk.

The ‘A’ walk will be led by club president Mick Melvin who has been a member for 33 years. There will be a ‘B’ walk led by Rita Schofield who has been a member for the same length of time.

Places on the club coach are fully booked for the day, but if members of the public are able to make their own way to Malham for 10am they are welcome on the walks.

The club, currently with 230 members, organises six to ten-mile walks on Saturdays, up to 14-mile walks on Sundays and a week’s holiday each year.

Mr Melvin said: “We are a varied and friendly lot. Some are very strong walkers while many enjoy a more relaxed pace and a chat.

“We don’t mind if people want to use the coach to do their own walk as long as they are back on time.”

In the last 110 years, the club have had lots of celebrations including their 21st birthday party in 1924, a walk to Edinburgh to celebrate 100 years of walking in 2003 and Irene Hudson producing a book called Ramble Down Memory Lane which is available through the club or at Waterstones.
