Re-offenders should automatically be handed longer sentences than the last time they were sent down, Shipley MP Philip Davies believes.

He is sponsoring two Bills being put before Parliament to try and ensure prisoners serve their sentences in full and that criminals convicted of further crimes receive a longer sentence than their last crime.

Mr Davies said: “I have always believed we need honest sentencing. If someone is given ten years then that is what he or she should serve. We should not let people out early for good behaviour but keep them longer for bad behaviour. We should expect good behaviour in our prisons.

“When children are well-behaved at school they were are let out on time, and put in detention for bad behaviour – they are not let out early.”

Mr Davies said: “With the accelerator it would automatically give a longer sentence than the previous one. People should be given longer and longer sentences each time they commit a crime.”
