Daring escapologist Antony Britton is planning a new mega stunt in Bradford later this year – which could be explosive.

The former Beckfoot School pupil, who was brought up in Saltaire and has family in Bradford, will be giving himself just 90 seconds to escape from an eight-foot circumference steel cage, fastened by 22 locks, multiple chains and seven shackles.

And he revealed: “The only other thing I’m going to give away is that it could be rather explosive – there will be four fuses attached to it.”

The spectacular stunt will be held in Centenary Square on Saturday, September 21, to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

It will include live bands during the day.

Mr Britton is hoping his next stunt will be less of a pain in the bottom than the one last Halloween when he hung 50 feet upside down over a river in Wakefield and one of the burning ropes supporting him came loose, setting his rear-end on fire while crowds looked on in horror.

Thanks to protective clothing, he emerged unscathed and raised more than £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Other escapes under his belt have included being buried alive and getting out from a wooden crate laced with explosives and chains. He has also picked his way through handcuffs, locks and shackles as well as escaping from ropes, steel cages and glass chambers.

Mr Britton hopes the drama of his Bradford stunt will lead to more people donating to his charity appeal called Escape For Life (EFL) which he set up to raise funds for worthy causes.

The September stunt was almost foiled when some supporters had to pull out but Barrett Steel Bradford saved the day by donating all the steel needed to construct the cage which is almost completed.

“Everyone involved with EFL donates their own time and money to the projects we run so that every penny we raise from public donations goes to the chosen charity. But we were flat broke and literally days away from pulling the plug completely,” said Mr Britton.

“Word got out that we were in serious trouble and before I knew what was going Barrett Steel Bradford had a truckload of steel delivered to the door. So much steel that we’ve been able to design a completely new, never-seen-before escape that will blow our audiences minds.”
