A film made by Bradford schoolchildren has beaten entries from across the world to win a screening at a national film festival.

Youngsters at Newhall Park Primary School, Bierley, will have their film Shannon of the Dead screened at the 2013 Co-operative Film Festival at the National Media Museum from July 17-19.

The entry was one of 76 shortlisted from 153 productions submitted by schools, youth groups, colleges and video workshops from across the UK and from as far afield as Slovenia, Italy and Iran.

The selected films, all under six minutes long, are made by people aged 22 and under and include drama, documentary, animation, comedies and music videos.

They will be shown over nine screenings throughout the three-day festival.

Seven films will also receive an Advisers’ Choice award after being recognised as particularly strong entries for other young film-makers to aspire towards.

The Co-operative Film Festival, now in its 48th year, is organised by the Co-operative Group and provides young people with the opportunity to air their films on the big screen.

Festival patron Edgar Wright, the award-winning director of hit films Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, had a film screened at a Co-operative Festival as a child.

Festival organiser Laura Boonham said: “The quality of the films and imagination shown in the shortlisted entries have been incredible and will make great viewing during the three-day event.

“The film festival is a great opportunity for young film-makers to showcase their talents and see their work on the big screen at a major national venue.

“They can also take part in exciting learning shows, view specially programmed packages of short films from around the world and receive feedback on their films.”
