A Bradford couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary today.
Ronnie and Barbara Newton (pictured) attended the same school in Thornton, but did not get to know each other until they worked at Grattan’s warehouse.
The couple planned their wedding on July 4, 1953, after Barbara asked her boss for time off for a holiday but could only give her time off if it was for a wedding. She mentioned this to her future husband, who said “OK, we’ll get married then.”
The couple, of Fairweather Green, had a son David and daughter Brenda. Mr Newton enjoyed singing and went on to become a member of a club act called The Benny King Trio.
His wife worked as an ambulance escort. They were celebrating their anniversary with friends and family.
