A driver who endangered Sunday morning shoppers by speeding in a supermarket car park was today jailed for eight months.

Oliver Fox, 25, was nearly twice over the legal alcohol limit when he was involved in the “sustained” piece of dangerous driving.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Fox, of Heatherlands Avenue, Denholme, was seen driving an Isuzu Trooper erratically and without a seat belt by a police officer in Morley Street, Bradford city centre.

The officer indicated for him to stop, but Fox drove off down a cobbled street and into Thornton Road.

The court heard he then drove at speeds up to 60mph, went through traffic lights on the wrong side of the road, and hit a wall and metal fencing in separate collisions.

At one point Fox, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol, drove into the Morrison’s car park.

Other vehicles had to pull in to avoid him and he passed pedestrians without slowing up. He struggled to make the corners because of his speed.

The vehicle finally stopped at West Park Road. He was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary for injuries to his face and hands, and was arrested.

In mitigation, Fox’s barrister, Sohail Khan, said it was a short-lived incident and his client was distressed by the break up of a relationship.

Jailing him, Judge John Potter said Fox had put supermarket shoppers in danger.

He added: “It was only by extreme good fortune that no-one was very seriously injured indeed.”

Fox was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to take an extended test before driving again.
