A driver has been attacked with a metal bar in what appears to have been a road rage incident not far from Bradford city centre.

Witnesses to the alleged assault tried to intervene to help the victim, who suffered head injuries in the attack.

Police yesterday revealed details of the incident, which happened on Manchester Road near its junction with Park Road, between 4.30pm and 4.40pm on Friday, May 31.

It happened when the victim had stopped his silver Renault Megane behind a small blue hatchback type vehicle.

He stayed in the Megane but a man got out of the hatchback and walked towards his car, opening the door and assaulting him with a metal bar causing head injuries.

When people came to help the injured man, the second man got into the blue car and left the scene. A number of people witnessed the incident and officers want to speak to them about it. The suspect was believed to be Asian.

Little Horton ward councillor Naveeda Ikram (Labour) said: “I’m really shocked and concerned about what kind of person would carry out this kind of attack in broad daylight on such a busy road. I hope the police are doing all they can to catch whoever he is. This is a very busy road, with shops and a park nearby. It’s appalling.”

And fellow Labour ward councillor Sher Khan mirrored her concerns and said: “I hope the man who got hurt is making a recover. It’s outrageous this happened. I can’t understand the mentality of people who do such a thing, they are a danger to the public and need to be caught and prosecuted.

“I don’t know what led to this happening but I know we do have problems in this ward with young Asian men pulling up in the road in cars and talking to each other, which stops others behind them from passing easil –, that could cause problems.”
