Unemployed teenagers have undergone intensive courses aimed at equipping them for the world of work.

The courses were organised by careers advice organisation Prospects.

Ten jobless people aged 16 to 19 completed a four-week ‘Get into admin’ course, which included a fortnight’s work experience and mock interviews with an employer.

Participants were given individual feedback about their performance, watched videos about jobseeking and were asked to identify good and bad interviews.

They were also given help drawing up CVs, learned how to write a covering letter and how to sell themselves on job application forms.

A further nine young jobseekers took part in an eight-week literacy skills course. For most of them, English was their second language.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, has now presented all the successful young people with certificates.

Course spokesman Sybil Bryan said: “We recognise the chances of young people getting into employment are greatly hindered due to the prevailing economic climate and this course has equipped the young people with the relevant skills, invaluable work experience placements and professional advice and support to aid them into moving into positive outcomes at a time when information, advice and guidance is needed more than ever.”

In August, Prospects will be running another four-week course for young people aged 16 to 19 wishing to work in customer service.
