A schoolboy injured in a quad bike crash must stay in hospital for at least another two days after undergoing plastic surgery.

Doctors say 11-year-old Umir Saleem is starting to recover after he suffered a broken right leg, broken left ankle and internal bleeding.

The youngster had been playing cricket with his older brother when the collision happened just before 6pm in Wilmer Road, Heaton, on Saturday.

His father, Mohammed Saleem Qasim, says he will now be contacting his local councillors and MP George Galloway to call for tighter restrictions on quad bikes before anyone else gets hurt.

"My son is lucky to be alive. Thank God he is still here, but another time it might be someone else’s son and he might not be so lucky,” he said.

“There are too many of these quad bikes on Bradford’s streets. Something has to be done to crack down on them. I’ve got to do something for the pain my son has suffered and to stop anyone else suffering more pain.”

Heaton ward councillor Mohammed Shabir (Respect) said: “I completely support what the boy’s father is saying. There is the safety issue of other people and road users, but also the issues of the personal safety of the people riding these bikes. Often they are without helmets.

“Then there’s the noise factor. It can startle people and other car drivers. It can distract them, which itself can cause more dangers.”

Mr Qasim added: “Umir is fine, he’s talking. He had an operation on Sunday on his leg. He’s had plastic surgery.

“The doctors are pleased with him, but they want to keep him in for a few more days to make sure they can get him back up on his feet okay.”

Mr Qasim said he could not praise enough the doctors and nurses who have looked after his son.

“You hear people complaining about the NHS all the time, but I can’t fault them. They have all been wonderful and I thank them.”

Two 19-year-old men, believed to have been on the black quad bike at the time, were also taken to hospital with injuries. One of them was treated for minor injuries, but the other suffered serious head and facial wounds.

Police inquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information or who saw the quad bike in the area earlier should contact PC Richard Hirst at Western Area Road Policing on 101.
