Summer favourite Baildon Gala has been cancelled due to tough economic times, bureaucracy and the need to rebuild the whole event for 2014.

Historically organised by local builders William Ellis and associated volunteers, the event has raised thousands for Baildon charities and good causes over the years.

Liz Ellis, of 175-year-old family firm William Ellis and Sons, said: “It’s with a very heavy heart that we’ve had to cancel it this year.

“It was a difficult decision to make, because it’s always such a fun time.

“But perhaps people don’t realise just how hard it is to organise and with all the red tape there is these days. Frankly it’s become a big chore.”

In recent years the Jenny Lane Fields event, held on the second Saturday in July, has been primarily organised by her father, Willie Ellis with help from relatives Simon and Sarah Fitt and other family and friends.

But the bulk of coping with Council and health and safety matters was tackled by their friend David Mitchell, who has now moved to Spain.

Miss Ellis, 27, added: “To be honest we’re all so busy with work during this difficult climate, that there isn’t the spare time to devote to that sort of thing.

“We’d love to hear from new people who want to come in and help resurrect it for next year along the same non-profit lines.”

Baildon traders’ spokesman Matthew Wildman said: “Virtually every child in Baildon would go to the Gala – it’s a real shame.”

Councillor Debbie Davies (Con, Baildon) said it would have an impact on local youth groups in particular.

“I think it’s a massive loss, not just in the money that’s raised for them.”
