A 25-year-old man has been warned to expect a prison sentence after he pleaded guilty today to knocking down and killing a Bradford pedestrian.

Anees Asghar, of Gibraltar Road, Halifax, was at the wheel of a silver Renault Megane when it struck Andrew Simpson, 39, as he crossed Great Horton Road, Bradford, at 1.20am on October 1, 2011.

Mr Simpson of Hollybank Gardens, Great Horton, had got out of a taxi after a night out with friends in Huddersfield. He was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.

Asghar admitted causing Mr Simpson’s death by careless driving and causing death while driving uninsured.

Judge Peter Benson told him: “These are serious matters and you must expect a custodial sentence.”

He imposed an interim driving disqualification.

Asghar was also found guilty of stabbing a 15-year-old schoolboy in the back with a screwdriver yesterday.

He was convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court after a separate trial that started last week.

Asghar was remanded in custody after he was found guilty of wounding the teenager with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

The offence took place in the Mile Cross Road area of Halifax, in January 2012, just a few months after Asghar hit Mr Simpson.

Asghar was locked up by Recorder Christopher Attwooll, who told him to expect a substantial prison sentence when he is brought back to court on August 19.
