Six fire crews battled a blaze at a Guiseley mansion early today.

Rawdon firefighters were alerted at 1.50am to the fire at the £1 million Victorian house, which stands in secluded grounds.

Greenlaw Manor, a sprawling house with an annexed swimming pool is unoccupied and undergoing extensive renovations as its owners try to sell it.

Fire officers first had to use bolt cutters to get through the chained gates.

A crew from Shipley was second to arrive, followed by Stanningley, Idle, Cookridge and Bradford – which brought its pump equiped with an arial ladder.

While the fire swept through most of the building, quick use of pumps prevented the destruction of the property and confined damage to large orangery and other buildings attached to the stone-built house, a West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said.

Three crews were still damping down the building this morning.
