Bradford City’s fairytale Capital One Cup run meant staff at Bradford City’s Club Shop smashed their yearly sales target in the space of four weeks in February, it has been revealed.

And now the club is hoping the draw of Wembley will work its magic once more when the Bantams return for the sequel – the League Two play-off final against Northampton Town.

Paul Stevens, club shop manager, said the “sequels” theme was being used for some new merchandise to mark the showpiece clash on Saturday, May 18.

“Everyone’s been talking about the fact it’s Wembley the sequel – our second trip this season,” he said.

“We started thinking of concepts for merchandise and thinking of sequels and have been posting pictures on our Facebook page.

“We’ve done one – Bantam Returns, a spoof of Batman Returns – which has been well received, so I think we’ll get those ordered.

“It’s a quick turnaround, because we’ve got less than two weeks to go, but we’re hoping to have play-off merchandise in the shop this week.”

Bantams’ double Wembley success has led to a busy season for staff at the shop – particularly in the month ahead of the Capital One Cup final against Swansea on February 24.

“There were five members of staff working 12 hours a day, seven days a week,” Mr Stevens said. “It felt like we had worked a year in a month!

“We’re definitely going to smash our sales from this time last year, because usually this time of year is quiet for football club shops. We’re still selling products from the last Wembley trip “There’s so much positivity around the place and the fans are so excited about their second Wembley trip “It’s something really special.”

The club’s unprecedented success in the Capital One Cup meant the shop sold out of Bantams’ home shirts in January – despite ordering 20 per cent more than last season.

But new play-off final merchandise, including hats, scarves, car stickers and flags, are expected to go on sale in the Valley Parade store this week Mr Stevens said: “We didn’t want to jump the gun.

“We’ve heard Burton already had Wembley scarves printed!

“A second trip to Wembley is great for the club and great for the city. Bradford gets bad press sometimes, but this has put us on the map.

“The way the fans conducted themselves at Wembley last time was a great advert for the city. The way they stood on their feet and sang in the last 20 minutes – when you see things like that it goes beyond football.

“It’s been a crazy season, but hopefully we can top it off with a play-off victory and promotion – and I think we can do it!”
