A terrified woman who woke to find a naked stranger sitting on her bed had left the area because the incident left her so traumatised, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Drunken Steven Hall, 48, woke the woman, in her twenties, by stroking her hand and arm. She was horrified to see him on her bed wearing no clothes, prosecutor David Gordon said yesterday.

Hall, of Cross Road, Keighley, pleaded guilty to trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and sexual assault on August 18 last year.

Mr Gordon said the woman was asleep and her fiance was downstairs at the home they shared in Keighley. She was woken after midnight by Hall, who told her he was “Steve” and was allowed to stay over.

The woman dialled 999 and her fiance found Hall getting dressed and ushered him out.

Hall told police he remembered nothing about the incident. He had been to a football match and then went drinking at a working mens’ club. He set off to walk home and then his mind was a blank.

Mr Gordon said the woman and her fiance had left the area because they were so distressed. Judge Peter Benson said it must have been “a disgusting experience” for the victim.

Hall was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with a community order. He must attend an alcohol treatment programme and obey a three-month curfew. He was ordered to pay the woman £1,000 compensation.
