A planning blueprint which could see up to 70,000 homes built around Leeds has set its figures too high, it is being claimed.

The Core Strategy for Leeds, which would impact on roads, facilities and communities in parts of the Bradford district, has come under fire from campaigners who say the figure is an over-estimate and needs to be cut.

Leeds City Council, which is standing by its statistics, published its core strategy last year. The document is a development blueprint that could see up to 70,000 properties built around the city by 2028.

But it is being challenged by opponents including the campaign group WARD (Wharfedale and Airedale Review Development) and Horsforth Town Councillor Martin Hughes.

They say the council has not reacted to a lower than expected population growth, revealed in the 2011 census.
