Staff and pupils at a school have raised hundreds of pounds to help a trainee PE teacher who was paralysed after a holiday in Greece.

Callum Hall, 20, was poisoned last year after he stepped on a sea urchin. The venom created an abscess on his spine, which burst and left him paralysed.

Staff and pupils at the Holy Family Catholic School in Keighley clubbed together to raise money to aid Callum’s recovery and provide specialist equipment to help him walk again.

Callum, from Yeadon, has said he is hoping to compete in the 2016 Paralympics.

Staff took part in a sponsored exercise bike challenge during the school day when they collectively cycled 85 miles between 9am and 3pm.

The cycle began during the year seven assembly, and was carried out on the stage in the main school hall.

Seventeen members of staff took part in the exercise bike ride, collecting more than £700 in total, while pupils took part in a non-uniform day, raising a further £630.

The bike riders all wore ‘Ride for Callum’ T-shirts, donated by MC Sports, in Skipton.

Jess Moran, progress leader for year seven at Holy Family, said Callum is known to staff at the Keighley school who are part of the same church parish as Callum’s family.

She added that Holy Family head teacher Lawrence Bentley, and deputy head Martin Hings have both taught Callum’s siblings.

She said the bike ride, non-uniform day and a range of other fundraising activities should amass a combined sum of nearly £1,500.

“The bike ride and non-uniform event was a really good day for the school,” she said.

“Even though the students don’t know Callum they gave very generously.”
