Wardens on video-equipped motorbikes are joining the fight to combat yobs on quad bikes who are terrorising people in parks and children’s play areas.

The Bradford Council wardens will join police on additional patrols targeting known hotspots including Bierley, Bradford, and Windhill, Shipley, during Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour Together Week.

Quad bikes, 4x4s and trail bikes have also caused damage to some beauty spots, including Baildon Moor and Shipley Glen, and there are concerns for the safety of families and walkers in those areas.

Last week, the Telegraph & Argus reported that masked quad bikers are tearing ruts across open spaces above Windhill and Wrose and putting children at risk. The ward’s three councillors Vanda Greenwood, Alex Ross-Shaw and Susan Hinchcliffe have called for action to protect the landscape and residents’ safety.

Now as part of a joint project to combat anti-social behaviour, problem riders will be targeted.

Councillor Imran Hussain, the deputy leader of Bradford Council, said: “Bradford district has some beautiful parks and moorlands and everyone has a right to enjoy these without fear or harassment from off-road vehicles.

“These spaces also need to be protected against the damage caused by quads, 4x4s and trail bikes.

“This dangerous and offensive activity is simply unacceptable and we will take very firm action against those who won't respect the law.”

The off-road vehicles have also caused noise nuisance and threatened wildlife.

Residents have witnessed ‘near misses’ involving off-road vehicles and deep ruts have damaged fragile heather and topsoil at Baildon Moor and Shipley Glen.

In Windhill, quads and 4x4s have been damaging grass verges, parks and open spaces.

In Bierley, quad bikes have been reported racing around children's playgrounds and playing fields. The Council hopes the additional patrols will deter would-be off-roaders, however they will prosecute and seize the vehicles of those caught driving or riding illegally on public land.
