Work has started on a £250,000 community hall at the heart of a Bradford neighbourhood.
Archdeacon of Bradford, the Venerable David Lee, laid the first stone for the building, which is being built on a church car park in Laisterdyke.
The Parochial Church Council at St Mary’s Church is leading the scheme, which is expected to be completed by June.
Once the centre is built, it will be used as a hub for people to meet up, have fun, receive support and advice and learn new skills, according to Priest-in-Charge, the Reverend Jane Trenholme.
The Archdeacon said: “It’s wonderful to see a small church creating a new community space. People have worked very hard and I look forward to seeing new and exciting things happen here."
Funds have come from various grant organisations as well as from the sale of the old St Mary’s Church in Pawson Street. The Diocese of Bradford has also loaned £25,000 to make the project deadline while fundraising by church members and local groups continues to fit out the building.
