A woman who wants to raise the profile of one of Britain’s most endangered native types of dog was among an impressive group of local competitors in this year’s Crufts show.

Margaret Samuel, who lives just outside Keighley, enjoyed success with her two Skye Terriers – mother and daughter pair Minnie and Jinty.

Eight-year-old Minnie was first in the Veteran Bitch Class, while five-year-old Jinty won the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bitch Class.

Ms Samuel, who has been competing for seven years and owns four Skye Terriers, said: “I’m delighted – it’s always nice to win.

“I show my dogs to help keep this breed going, and to try and ensure it doesn’t die out completely.

“Many people are moving into the more designer breeds of dogs, and are forgetting about our native breeds.”

Other successful dog owners from the area included Dorothy and Derrick Bailey, who won two classes with a King Charles Spaniel and a Japanese Chin, and Mary Atkinson, whose Norfolk Terriers won one class and a dog challenge certificate.
