The district is whipping itself up for a Comic Relief frenzy today with crazy antics and some tasty – and not so tasty – treats!

Teachers at St Mary’s Primary School, in Riddlesden, Keighley, are tackling a series of gross challenges including eating insects in their own version of a popular TV show, calling it ‘I'm A Teacher, Get Me Out Of Here’.

The school’s history of Comic Relief fundraising has led to two members of staff, Helen Fox and Louise Kendrick, being invited to tonight’s live show in London. The school had raised £2,234 for this year’s effort even before today.

Mrs Fox said: “We expect to raise an awful lot more on the actual day. Once the BBC found out we were doing ‘I’m a Teacher..’ they seemed very interested. We try and do something bigger and better for each Comic Relief.”

She will be easy to spot on the BBC show, as she has been asked to wear her Comic Relief costume for the recording – a giant whoopee cushion.

Meanwhile hairdresser Wayne Anthony is hoping his feel for cutting hair will help him get into the Guiness Book of Records.

The stylist, who has a salon, named after himself in Halifax Road, Hipperholme, is cutting hair blindfolded today to do his bit for Comic Relief.

And he has recruited brave volunteer Ian White from Look North to be his client in the chair – cheered on by onlookers.

“We're hoping to draw quite a crowd who will dig deep in their pockets,” he said. “I'm giving myself about 20 minutes to do it – part of the challenge is to make a good job of it otherwise there’s no point doing it. I’ve checked with National Hairdressers Foundation and nothing like this has been attempted before for a world record.”

In Idle sisters Olivia and Alycia Booth, aged nine and 11, have been busy baking sweet treats with their friends to sell at a verge-side stall outside their home in Westfiled Lane from 4.30pm.

They have even designed and handed out their own posters and fliers to potential customers who they hope will turn out – rain or shine.

Proud mum Tracie Booth said: “They’ve worked really hard planning this for a few weeks now and have got everyone baking with them. Olivia’s school at Idle CofE is having a bake-off and any unsold buns they’re donating to us to sell for them.”

At Birkenshaw C E (C) Primary, pupils will be sporting wacky hairstyles during a Mad Hair Day.

And Comic Relief fever has even spread to outer space with the University of Bradford challenging all budding astronomers to search the cosmos for red noses.

By logging on to a special telescopic website, people will be able to search through a bank of 100,000 images for clues to find red noses before taking their very own image with the Bradford Robotic Telescope and submit it to the rosy-nosed competition gallery.

The subscription fee is just £3 per month and the ten winning entries will receive free membership for a whole year, and half of the money raised by the university will be donated to Comic Relief. People can log on at telescope.org/rednoseday.

Football fans might also like to keep an eye out for a giant ball being ‘dribbled’ all the way from Bradford City’s home ground at Valley Parade to Elland Road in Leeds.
