The world-renowned London Philharmonic Orchestra makes its first visit to Bradford in May as part of a ‘Live and Local’ tour aimed at making classical music more accessible.
The concert, at St George’s Hall, features star guitarist Miloš Karadaglic who is regarded as one of the best young soloists on the classical circuit today and is in demand across the world. Last year he received awards for Gramophone Young Artist of the Year and Classic Brit Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
The programme includes one of the most famous and dramatic works of classical music, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, as well as Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasía para un Gentilhombre by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo.
Concierto de Aranjuez is a concerto for guitar and orchestra inspired by the beauty of the palace and gardens at Aranjuez near Madrid. Rodrigo’s 1954 Fantasía para un Gentilhombre (Fantasia for a Gentleman) is an evocative concerto written for the virtuoso guitarist Andrés Segovia.
The concert will be conducted by Jaime Martín who recently finished conducting a run of Rossini’s Barber of Seville at English National Opera.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1932, and since then has been headed by many of the great names in the conducting world, including Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur.
The current Principal Conductor is Russian Vladimir Jurowski, appointed in 2007, and French-Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin is Principal Guest Conductor. Julian Anderson is the Orchestra’s Composer in Residence.
As well as giving classical concerts, the orchestra also records film and video game soundtracks, has its own record label, and reaches thousands of people every year through activities for schools and local communities.
Its Live and Local tour is supported by long-term supporter JTI as part of its Corporate Philanthropy activities in the UK.
