Silsden councillors have called for a town-wide referendum on whether the town hall should be refurbished.
The town council believes that planned consultation meetings on Wednesday, March 27, in the town do not go far enough. They say that only a referendum, or a questionnaire distributed to all residents, would properly assess local opinion.
Town councillors fear selling Silsden’s library building – to pay for town hall improvements – will leave the town with a shortage of community buildings.
The statement said: “It is the selling-off of Silsden's assets in the centre of town that the town council is opposed to. We believe that this has not been made clear to the people of Silsden.”
Bradford Council has invited the town council to have a representative on a steering group due to oversee the refurbishment.
Town councillors voted not to send a councillor to the steering group, saying it would be inappropriate, but will send a volunteer.
