Bollywood film posters from the past century have gone on display in Bradford to celebrate 100 years of the Indian film industry.
This year’s Bradford International Film Festival, presented in partnership with Virgin Media, is celebrating the centenary with a season of new and classic Indian movies.
To complement the screenings, the National Media Museum is hosting Bollywood Icons, an exhibition of posters highlighting powerful dynasties of Indian cinema and the romantic entanglements of many of Bollywood’s most famous stars.
Running until June 16, the exhibition includes vintage and contemporary posters, rare first prints and vibrant handpainted prints, and clips from the first Indian feature, Raja Harishchandra, which premiered in 1913, are being screened.
Curator Irna Qureshi said: “ Indian films and film posters often blur the boundaries between Indian cinema stars’ on and off-screen lives by featuring real-life lovers, married couples and generations of the same family. As a result, audiences’ fascination with their favourite stars reaches levels rarely, if ever, seen elsewhere in the world”.
