A Chinese takeaway delivery man has been unmasked as the mystery figure dressed as Batman who handed a wanted man in at Bradford’s main police station.

CCTV images of Stan Worby, 39, of Wyke, dressed as the caped crusader were revealed by police yesterday after he took 27-year-old friend Daniel Frayne to officers at Trafalgar House police station early on Monday, February 24.

Frayne was wanted by police and Mr Worby, who grew up in the Bierley area, said he agreed to go with him to the police station after he had been to London’s Wembley Stadium for Bradford City’s Capital One Cup Final against Swansea the day before.

He told ITV Daybreak yesterday: “Obviously it was done as a joke.

“He (Frayne) wanted to get straight down. Obviously I wanted my bed. It was half-one in the morning.”

Asked how he felt about the worldwide coverage of his exploits, Mr Worby said: “Gobsmacked. I didn’t expect this.

“At the end of the day it was a practical joke, just between me and Daniel.”

The Telegraph & Argus yesterday reported how officers at the city’s main police station were left stunned after Mr Worby, dressed in the 1960s incarnation of the famous DC Comics character, handed over the suspect saying: “I’ve caught this one for you.”

Yesterday Mr Worby’s cousin Andrew Worby, 33, of Shipley, said the first he knew of his relative’s crime-fighting antics was when he saw him on television.

“When my wife saw the CCTV pictures she said she thought it was him – she said she recognised his build.

“When it was revealed it actually was him she said ‘I told you!’ I couldn’t believe it!

“A long time ago he used to get into trouble when he was a young lad, but now he has totally turned his life around.

“He’s done really well and we’re very proud of him.”

He also confirmed that Mr Worby was a cousin of brothers Tony Worby, 25, and Jonathan Worby, 21, of Greengates, who died with their friend Gareth Rhodes, 23, of Eccleshill, in a car crash on the M1 motorway after watching England beat Kazakhstan 5-1 on October 11, 2008.

Frayne, of Queen Street, Buttershaw, Bradford, had been wanted in connection with a number of alleged offences.

He was later charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offences, and is due to appear at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
