Four women were being shown the stunning waterside views from a Brighouse hotel when the balcony they were on collapsed yesterday.

The 45 square foot metal structure fell about 12 feet to a patio area below, crushing a metal table and chairs at the Casa hotel and restaurant.

Police tape cordoned off the scene where patches of blood were seen among shattered glass from the balcony’s front.

The man showing the women round the Casa hotel and restaurant, said to be owner Jack McDaid, was also on the balcony and suffered head injuries in the fall.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The women, who staff at the Elland Road venue insisted were not part of a bridal party, are believed to have suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to hospital in Huddersfield.

Sam Holmes, group manager at the Casa, said: “After an unfortunate incident today, all persons involved are receiving professional care. Our thoughts remain with them and we wish them a speedy recovery.

“All areas of our business remain unaffected and we are actively working with the relevant bodies to investigate the incident fully.”

The balcony collapse happened outside the venue’s main bedroom, which has a four-poster bed.

Mr Holmes described the moment he found out about the collapse, which happened at about 11.50am.

“A member of staff who was sitting in the restaurant area saw it happen,” said Mr Holmes. “I was getting people away from it and trying to help. We want to know how and why and for what reason it happened.”

He added: “The Health and Safety Executive have been and are satisfied the building is fine. And building control from Calderdale Council are happy the building is fine to occupy.”

Mr Holmes said no customers were due to use the bedroom last night and that the business, which caters for a lot of weddings, was open as usual.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said five ambulances, a doctor and a hazardous area response team were sent to the scene.

The spokesman said: “Ambulance clinicians provided treatment at the scene and five adults have been taken to hospital for further care.

"All sustained serious injuries but none are believed to be life-threatening at this time.”
