Tonight and tomorrow, Selina Thompson invites you to bring your own snacks to her solo show Chew the Fat at Bradford University’s Theatre in the Mill.

Her autobiographical piece plays with ideas about anorexia, bulimia, fat acceptance, the beauty myth, feminism, the fashion industry, weight loss, the diet industry, discrepancies between the European ideal of beauty and the Afro Caribbean ideal of beauty, girls being bitchy to other girls, how men feel about their body and how you should feel about your body. Selina, a 22-year-old performer, said: “I’ve been fat for a long time now, and I thought I was fat, even when I wasn’t, and as such, I’ve been thinking about fat for even longer. So I made a show about it.”

This performance is a work in progress, and she encourages the audience to stay afterwards and share their thoughts with her.

She hopes the audience will leave feeling brave and optimistic, even if she has to reveal things that are painful. Her work is based in biography as she seeks to connect people to each other.

“Selina Thompson: look out for that name. The most assured, hilarious and downright brilliant performer I’ve seen in ages,” said Iain Bloomfield, artistic director at Theatre in the Mill.

Chewing the Fat is at Theatre in the Mill on February 15 and 16, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £3 from (01274) 233200 or e-mail theatre@bradford.ac.uk.
