The importance of showing dignity and respect to others will be highlighted by a Bradford charity on Saturday.

About 400 people from across the district are expected to attend Brandnet’s Dignity In Care Day as part of a national campaign.

The Bradford-based charity is hosting the event in a bid to make it clear that all forms of indignity towards people receiving care will not be tolerated.

Jean Walker, founder and chairman of Bradford and District Senior Power, said: “I think the event is a good way of raising awareness. I find sometimes that people who are younger than me have an image in their mind of an older person – they think we are not as sharp mentally. I am a bit slow physically, but not slow mentally.”

Bradnet, which strives for the equality of disabled people, is promoting the campaign by offering a day of activities. Mehndi, karaoke, face painting, and arts and crafts will be among the attractions. The event will be held at the Carlisle Business Centre, Carlisle Road, between 10am and 4pm.

Jessica Graven, independent living service care coordinator at Bradnet, said: “The care can be given from us or any other organisation. It is to give the service users confidence and knowledge to challenge anything they feel is not a good level or experience of care.

“I think it is important to hold events like this to give everybody the opportunity to see that their dignity, respect and choice must always be important to any care provider.”

The Telegraph & Argus campaign ‘With Respect’ is also designed to change the attitude the society to the older generation.
