It seems that love conquers the recession, according to Bradford shoppers and traders this Valentine’s Day.

Despite the Bradford district being branded the second least romantic place in Britain in a poll by Hotels.com, the public disagree as they still say they splashed out on romantic gifts for their loved ones.

Florists and market traders did notice a dip in sales yesterday due to the snowfall but still said people are parting with their money for their Valentine.

Chris Thompson, owner of Thompson’s Florists, in Kirkgate, Bradford, said: “I think people are still spending money and are buying more upmarket things. We were a bit quiet yesterday with the snow but hopefully it will pick up.”

A Valentine’s Market lined Darley Street yesterday selling luxury chocolates, jewellery, arts and crafts and will be trading until Saturday.

Navide Aslam, owner of Pixelprint, in Kirkgate Market, said: “We have been really busy with people spending money on our personalised gifts including key rings and mugs. People have been spending a reasonable amount of money on the occasion.”

If you are looking for a last minute, unique gift for your partner a ‘new car’ scented aftershave could be the perfect choice.

People are urged to contact Shipley car dealership Colin Appleyard for details.

For those who are struggling to decide how to spend the day with their Valentine, there are a number of special events taking place across the district.

People could treat their loved one to a special evening on the back row of the big screen at the National Media Museum.

Bradfordians can enjoy a cinema romance with a meal for two followed by ‘Roman Holiday’ starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

Tickets are priced at £50 per couple and include the meal and cinema tickets and will be held this evening from 6.15pm.

Alternatively you could hop aboard the ‘Love Train’ from Ilkley to Menston with a novel Indian dining experience.

The 1875 Anglo Indian Restaurant based in Menston Railway Station is offering a package with return travel from Ilkley train station direct to the restaurant.

Fully attired Indian waiters will greet diners and provide canapés on arrival. The train will leave from Ilkley on the 7.21pm train.

Also, the ‘Hexagon Love’ exhibition celebrating the shape will be on show in The Hive Pop-Up Gallery, in Shipley Indoor Market from today.

The exhibition was created by people from across the Bradford district who designed their own unique piece of art in any media.

The grand opening will be held from 2pm to 5pm this afternoon.
