An MP has described how he is still haunted by the suicide of a boy at his school.
In a speech in Parliament Stuart Andrew, MP for Pudsey, urged action to prevent suicide – highlighting issues such as school bullying, cyber bullying and the need for a change in attitudes.
Mr Andrew, who grew up in Wales, described his own feelings after the death of a boy at his school who had taken his own life because he was being bullied.
He told fellow MPs: “All I could think about were the questions going around in my head. What could I have done? Why did I not spot that he was in that difficult place? If I am honest, those questions still haunt me today.”
Mr Andrew, who was speaking in support of the Government’s new suicide prevention strategy, highlighted the risks to vulnerable groups, particularly young people and males.
