A cricket club president and war veteran has celebrated his 102nd birthday.

Arthur Bailey, of Long Lee, was born in Keighley and has lived in the same house for 76 years. He landed on the D-Day beaches as a staff sergeant in the 6th Airborne Division and served as a magistrate for 50 years.

Commenting on his latest landmark yesterday he said: “I’ve been fortunate to enjoy good health. I’m still able to struggle about, but one of the biggest losses is when you’re not able to have a car anymore. I drove till I was 95.”

Mr Bailey attended Keighley Boys' Grammar School. In 1942 he joined the army, and took part in the military campaign across North west Europe until Germany’s defeat.

“I drove the same lorry across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany,” he said. “Afterwards I spent 18 months in Palestine.”

He spent all his working life with the Co-op, starting with the company aged 15, becoming an accountant and later a managing secretary.

He has been a keen sportsman, playing for Long Lee Cricket Club, where he is now the president.
