A member of Bradford Council says the Muslim community was horrified to hear that pork was found in prison food passed off as being Halal.
Councillor Abid Hussain has called for a full investigation into how the meat, forbidden in the Muslim faith, ended up in pies and pasties sent to prisons across the UK and described as being suitable for Muslim consumption.
Northern Ireland based McColgan Food Company was named as the supplier responsible, and is currently being investigated by the prison service.
The food products were found to contain pig DNA.
Coun Hussain (Lab, Keighley Central) said: “This is terrible. It is not right that Muslims could have been served pork. There needs to be a full investigation to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
“This is shocking news for all Muslim people, it is totally against our religion. A lot of people have been talking to me about it and are condemning this news.”
