Determined Andy Smith has turned down Super League rivals to fight for a regular place at Grattan Stadium.

The powerful winger has managed just ten first team starts since making his debut three years ago.

His prolific form in the Senior Academy, where he ran in 27 tries this season, has drawn attention from both Harlequins and Castleford Tigers but the player has decided to sign up again for Bradford.

Smith has penned a new one-year deal at Odsal and is bidding to finally make his mark in 2007.

"I feel at home and happy here at Bradford," he explained. "I want to play here and nowhere else.

"I wasn't tempted at all by the other offers. If I was I would have gone but all I've got my mind on is getting in this Bulls first team and setting myself up for next year.

"Hopefully Macca (Steve McNamara) has seen that and I'm confident of making a mark next season."

At 22, the former Wakefield-born flier needs to start imposing himself at first grade level.

Since signing from amateurs Snydale Scorpions, he has regularly shown his finishing prowess for the Under-21s, bagging an amazing SEVEN tries in one game against Quins earlier this year.

Now he has to make the transition but with Kiwi superstar Lesley Vainikolo and Papuan veteran Marcus Bai barring his path, Smith has a difficult task on his hands.

He said: "I'm going to work on my game really hard and set the goal for next year to play as many games as I can.

"I don't really want to be playing second team again and I can't really impress off the bench being a winger so I need more starts to show what I can do.

"Steve says there will be opportunities and that's enough for me to stay.

"Les might pick up a few injuries and Marcus is going to be the oldest man in Super League next season so hopefully I'll get a few shots!"

Smith made just one start this year - scoring in Perpignan - before appearing off the bench against Hull, Salford, Leeds and Catalans at home.

Boss McNamara said: "Andy has shown tremendous tenacity to hang in there as he probably hasn't played as many first team games as he'd have liked.

"He's been very loyal to the Bulls but next year will be a make-or-break season for him.

"He's a big, physical specimen who is looking to improve aspects of his game to take that next step."
