Bradford children to benefit from new Alhambra project

Children learning about Shakespeare under the pioneering education scheme

Bradford Theatres have been chosen by the Royal Shakespeare Company to be part of a three-year project aiming to change the way Shakespeare is taught and performed in schools.

The RSC recently invited Bradford Theatres to apply to join its Learning and Performance Network.

Following a vigorous application process, the Alhambra has been selected as the only Yorkshire venue to join the programme.

The three-year partnership between regional theatres, schools and the RSC aims to bring about a transformation in the teaching, learning and performance of Shakespeare in schools and to promote young people’s connection with Shakespeare.

It will include a visit to the city from the RSC’s Young People’s Shakespeare performance in 2014. The second year of the programme focuses on schools activities tailored for each area, and the third year culminates in a Shakespeare performance festival.

Jacqui O’Hanlon, RSC director of education, said: “We are delighted that the Alhambra has joined nine other regional theatres to work in partnership with us on the Learning and Performance Network.

“The Alhambra team has an incredibly strong vision for how we can achieve our shared goal of bringing Shakespeare’s work vividly to life in local schools and communities. We look forward to the next three years of work and play, developing a programme that encompasses accredited training for teachers and artists, a touring production of the RSC’s next Young People’s Shakespeare title in 2014, and performance festivals of work created by children and young people in the region.”

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, portfolio holder for employment, skills and culture for Bradford Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for children in Bradford to work closely with one of the most prestigious and respected drama companies in the world.

“To have been selected by the Royal Shakespeare Company is very exciting.

“What they are offering in Bradford will enrich the lives of children in our district, some of whom wouldn't normally be involved in theatre.”
