A Bradford swimming instructor has been locked up for two years for sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy.

University student Daniel Bendjelloul, 20, was arrested after the boy accidentally texted a police officer requesting another sexual encounter, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Bendjelloul, who was 18 at the time, admitted sexual grooming and two offences of sexual activity with a child, in September, 2011.

His sentencing came the day after a man aged 39 was jailed for molesting the same vulnerable youngster.

Craig Illingworth, of Jubilee Street, Halifax, was given three and a half years after he became one of around ten men involved with the child.

Prosecutor Matthew Bean told the court yesterday that Bendjelloul, of Sandhill Fold, Idle, Bradford, met the boy, from the Bradord area after chatting on a website and exchanging texts.

Bendjelloul, who knew he was 14, picked up the boy from near his school and they drove to a remote area where sex acts took place.

Mr Bean said the boy was in his school uniform and he returned to the school afterwards.

He sent a text message, asking Bendjelloul for another sex session, to a police officer by mistake.

Mr Bean said the police were already investigating what the boy was doing with men and taken away his phone.

Officers seized the phone he was using and traced the defendant.

Mr Bean said the child was seeing a psychiatrist and had been deeply affected by the abuse.

Peter Byrne, Bendjelloul’s barrister, said: “The boy had been engaged in similar and, perhaps, more serious activity prior to this time.”

Bendjelloul was very highly spoken of, a bright and able young man on a degree course. He had the support of his family and was of good character.

Judge Peter Benson sentenced Bendjelloul to two years’ detention in a young offender institution.

“This is a tragic case from any way viewed,” he said. The boy and his family had suffered “grievous hurt and distress” from the defendant and others.

“You were one of many people who took advantage of his youth and immaturity for sexual gratification.”
