Although the name Southern Tenant Folk Union has an American ring to it, this seven-piece acoustic band only owes part of its folk/blue grass music to the United States.
They play banjo, mandolin, fiddle and harmony vocals and have released four albums to date. They are appearing in Yorkshire to support the release of their fifth, Hello Cold Goodbye Sunshine.
Singer-songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps, however, is all the way from the USA, from the Pacific North West and has been performing since his debut album Lead Me On in 1994.
His new album, Brother Sinner and the Whale, was recorded in three days in Vancouver and includes songs such as Goodbye to Sorrow and Hard Times Have Never Gone Away.
Both acts are due to perform at Saltaire’s Caroline Club’s Live Room this month.
Southern Tenant Folk Union play on Sunday, January 13, and Kelly Joe Phelps on Friday, January 25.
