A 26-year-old man on trial accused of blasting a man in the street with both barrels of a sawn-off shotgun was entirely innocent of the crime, a jury at Bradford Crown Court heard.

Ziaurauman Khan told the police he could not believe his old school friend Nadeem Anwar said he had shot him.

Khan denies attempting to murder Mr Anwar in Parkway, West Bowling, Bradford, at about 10.30pm on April 17.

He is alleged to be responsible for a drugs-related attempt to execute Mr Anwar, who told the court he prepared to die when he saw Khan struggling to reload the weapon after shooting him twice in the body.

Mr Anwar, of Parkway, told how he held up his arm to protect his face and took a side-on blast from the shotgun.

He was treated in hospital for pellet wounds to his stomach, right lung, chest wall and hand.

Khan, of Springmill Street, West Bowling, Bradford, also pleads not guilty to an alternative charge of wounding Mr Anwar with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm and to possession of a prohibited weapon, a sawn-off shotgun.

Khan was himself shot in the back of the legs on April 2. He told the police he was with his three brothers at home watching a football match when Mr Anwar was shot.

Khan, who yesterday began giving his evidence, said he got caught up in trouble over a missing two kilos of heroin.

He said he gave the drugs to Mr Anwar to sell in London but he said they had been “robbed” off him.

Khan told the court the dealer who gave him the drugs to pass on did not believe him and threatened: “You’ve got what’s coming to you.”

Khan, known locally as Rush, said he fell to the floor in agony after he was shot in the street.

He thought the gunman was going to shoot him in the head and kill him.

He said his assailant fired one shot into his lower legs and one into the air.

The trial continues.
