Renowned gipsy music trio Koshka are bringing a seasonal flavour of Russia to Saltaire this month.

Described as vibrant and enthralling, the music is interspersed with light-hearted Russian anecdotes, providing an insight into the country’s cultural traditions of winter and Christmas.

Koshka are Russian violinists Oleg Ponomarev, formerly of “the world’s most famous Gipsy band” Loyko, and Lev Atlas, a principal with the Scottish Opera, joining forces with leading acoustic guitarist Nigel Clark. The trio, who recently released a third album, are said to stand at the cutting edge of gipsy music.

Koshka first met and honed their sound playing at Glasgow’s Russian Cafe Cossachok. Their music encompasses a range of styles; Russian, gipsy string tunes, classical and cafe-style pieces and the hotclub sound of Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.

Koshka will be at Victoria Hall, Saltaire, on Sunday, December 16, and Grassington Town Hall on Thursday, December 20. Tickets for both gigs are available on (01274) 588614. For more about the acts, visit saltairelive.co.uk.
