The Looked After Children’s woodland in Roberts Park, Saltaire had 22 new trees planted to represent how a child is taken into care every 22 minutes in Britain.

It is hoped that the woodland will symbolise that children need a solid base to put down roots and support so that they can blossom. The first tree was planted by Gareth Gates in May in support of the Foster Care Fortnight campaign.

In Bradford, there are about 900 children in care, 433 are ten years and over and the district desperately needs more carers.

Coun Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “In Bradford, we need more carers to look after older children and also to provide short breaks for all ages of children. If you think this is something you could offer, we would love to hear from you."

Martin Bijl, assistant manager for Roberts Park, said: “This venture is a prime example of Bradford Council and the Forest of Bradford working together for the community and will give extra shelter to Roberts Park for generations to come.”
