Proposed plans for a new extra care housing scheme in Bradford will be available for the public to view next week in order to gather feedback before the final scheme is submitted.

The new development is to be built on brownfield land adjacent to Bradford Secondary pupil referral unit at Ellar Carr Road, Thackley, and will be a rented apartment scheme for people aged 55 and over. The aim of extra care housing is to allow older people to live independently but to have access to support when needed.

Visitors to the event, being held next Wednesday, will be able to meet representatives from Housing 21 and Bradford Council to find out more about the scheme.

The proposals are to provide 51 rented one and two-bedroom apartments which are designed for independent living. Extra care means residents also benefit from on-site care, tailored to individual need, making it a popular alternative to residential care. Communal facilities at the scheme, which will be jointly funded in a partnership between Housing 21, the Council and the Department of Health, would include a restaurant, communal lounges, hairdressing salon and landscaped gardens.

Full detailed plans and an artist’s impression will be available to view at the event and people will be able to give their views via a questionnaire. The event will be held at the pupil referral unit between 2.30pm and 7pm.

Further information on the pre-planning consultation and the new scheme can be obtained from Philip Hayton, development programme officer for Housing 21 on 0370 192 4000.

The Council and Housing 21 opened a similar extra care housing scheme in Little Horton in 2006 – Mary Seacole House – aimed at the local community which contains a large proportion of the district’s Afro Caribbean population.

Jayne Hellowell, service manager, commissioning (adult and housing related support) at Bradford Council, said: “We are providing our full support to this scheme. It forms part of our strategy to provide more low-level preventative services for older and vulnerable adults.

“Extra care housing schemes like this let people live independently and with dignity, but at the same time having the reassurance of on-site staff and Telecare technology linking them to a response team.”
