Bradford’s Polish veteran community came together yesterday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Stanislaw Stepien, a Second World War veteran and community stalwart.

The city’s Polish Ex-Combatants Association held a special lunch to honour the long-standing member at the Polish Parish Club in Edmund Street.

Mr Stepien was born in the Kresy region of Poland. He joined the Polish Army and eventually ended up in the United Kingdom, where he joined the Polish 1st Armoured Division.

After the war Mr Stepien settled in Bradford with his wife Leonia, herself a veteran of the Polish Air Force. The couple have one daughter, Barbara, and now live in Saltaire.

Among those attending his birthday dinner was Polish Consul Lukasz Lutostanski.
