A former Army medic who issued a plea to reunite a First World War medal with the family of its Bradford recipient has returned it to his great niece after an appeal in the Telegraph & Argus.

The man, who does not want to be named, said the woman came forward after reading a story on the T&A website about his bid to trace the relatives of Pte Arthur Wootten, who was awarded the honour.

Private Wootten, of 113th Field Ambulance, died on March 27, 1918, aged 21, and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery in France. He was the son of James and Annie Wootton, who lived on St Michael’s Road, Bradford.

The former serviceman said: “He wasn’t a forgotten soldier, he was the great-uncle of the woman who got in touch and she knew all about him.

“They had memorabilia, medals and other things, except this one.

“It’s now been returned to them. I’m just glad it’s back where it belongs.”
