Tiny Ubaid Khan drowned in his bedtime bath after being left alone for about five minutes, a Bradford inquest has heard.

The 13-month-old had been put in the eight inches of water by his mother.

She then left his 15-year-old aunt to keep an eye on him while she went to iron his clothes ready for bed.

The tragedy happened in Annison Street, Barkerend, between 10pm and 10.30pm on November 11 last year.

It was when a male relative needed to use the toilet that the young aunt left the bathroom and went downstairs to warm up Ubaid’s milk.

Coroner Peter Straker heard how the male relative had given evidence that when he walked out of the bathroom he had last seen the little boy standing upright in the bath holding on to the rail.

The aunt had come back upstairs with the milk and gone to see Ubaid’s mother when she suddenly thought it seemed “very quiet” in the bathroom, the inquest was told.

She went to look and found Ubaid face down in the water.

The tot was plucked out of the bath and taken downstairs where family members tried to revive him.

They then drove him to Bradford Royal Infirmary in their own car, but he was not breathing.

Accident & emergency doctors called in police after Ubaid was pronounced dead at the hospital just before midnight that night.

The call triggered a police investigation with scenes of crime officers examining the house and detectives speaking to the family. A police report said there had not been enough evidence to pursue a criminal prosecution.

With no suspicious circumstances being found, it had “simply been a matter of mis-communication between family members,” the police report concluded.

Mr Straker recorded a verdict of accidental death at yesterday’s inquest.
