A 62-year-old Bradford man who died in an off-road accident has been named as well-known businessman David Simmonite.

Mr Simmonite of Thornton was a successful and highly-respected businessman who owned a Land Rover garage on Thornton Road. He was also the father of off-road rallying champions the Simmonite sisters, Rachael and Stephanie.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses following the fatal crash which occurred in a field by the M1 near Rotherham at 3.35pm on Easter Monday.

It is understood that Mr Simmonite was travelling in an off-road vehicle with another man at the time of the accident.

Michael Trees of South Yorkshire Police said: "It is reported the incident involved a Mattserati 1 vehicle, which is a type of 3000cc 4x4 buggy.

"It is believed the vehicle was travelling along the track and was climbing a short hill. The driver, a 39-year-old man from Doncaster, lost control of the vehicle and collided with bushes and a fence, which subsequently caused the vehicle to roll over several times.

"The passenger of the vehicle, a 62-year-old man from Thornton Bradford, died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the collision. The driver was uninjured."

South Yorkshire police appealed for anyone who witnessed the accident. A spokesman said: "As the track runs alongside the M1 motorway it is possible that motorists travelling along that stretch may have witnessed the collision. Anyone who can help should contact our Accident Witness Line on 0114 2202970."

Rotherham Coroner's office opened an inquest into the accident yesterday and confirmed that the deceased was Mr Simmonite.

There was widespread shock at the news. The Land Rover Network, an enthusiasts web-site posted numerous messages of condolence and tribute.

One tribute described Mr Simmonite as "The head of a family which has become legend across a whole spectrum of motoring interest."

Another said: "He will be sorely missed as one of the stalwarts of the hill rally scene. Condolences to his family, especially Rachael and Stephanie."

Mr Simmonite established the family business in 1963 starting out as a panel beater in an outhouse of the family farm. Simmonites specialise in ex-army Land Rovers, Mr Simmonite being the first to customise these. His daughters Rachael and Stephanie became three times British Ladies Rally Champions; in 1999 they became RAC British Off Road Champions.

None of Mr Simmonites family or work colleagues were available to comment yesterday.
