A Bradford builder who left a family of eight living in a “half-built wreck” will be exposed on Channel Five’s Cowboy Builders this week.

Showmakers were called to the rescue by the Khan family who, despite paying builder John Fraser £44,000, said they were left without windows, doors, heating and electricity after he disappeared from the job.

Presenters Dominic Littlewood and Melinda Messenger spoke to Haworth Road couple Naheem and Faye Khan, who said their life had been turned upside down.

The parents-of-six, who had just one daughter when they bought their bungalow in Brantwood Oval in 2002, got Mr Fraser in to work for them after adding five boys to their brood and needed to build upwards adding more bedrooms.

But the programme shows how the Cowboy Builders workforce had to put right a total of 13 rooms, including fitting a kitchen and bathroom.

Mr Fraser, who is from Scholes, is tracked down in the programme.

Mr Khan, 43, told the Telegraph & Argus Mr Fraser almost destroyed his family.

He said: “I got depressed and needed medication, my wife got depressed. It still puts a tear in my eye now to think what he put us through. We’ve got no chance of ever getting our money back, but at least going on Cowboy Builders gives us a chance to stop anyone else being conned.

“We know we are not the only ones to have suffered at his hands and that he has left a trail of heartbreak for so many other families.”

The T&A has also also spoken to two Bradford-based workmen who claim they are still waiting to be paid by Mr Fraser for jobs in the district. Plumber Keith Williams said he was left £1,000 short and electrician Brian Peacock, who worked on a house in the Bolton area for Mr Fraser, said he was owed £600.

Mr Peacock said: “John Fraser told me money had run out on the job so he couldn’t pay me, but the man who owned the house told me he’d paid him it all.”

When the T&A approached Mr Fraser about Cowboy Builders he said: “I’m going to kick up a real fuss about this. I’m the victim. I’ve been up against customers from hell. They are the real conmen, they just contact Cowboy Builders to get work done for free. I’m not a crook.”

J F Builders Ltd has now been dissolved.
