A SOCIAl club for science fiction fans is set for take-off in Bradford.

Leeds Bradford Starfleet, formerly Leeds Starfleet, was initially launched in the late 1980s but now a new group has been set up under the leadership of Erica Smith of Thornton and Clare Williams of Wyke.

The pair say the emphasis is on the fun and quirky nature of Star Trek and other sci-fi dramas, and the group will be raising funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

“When we took over the club we wanted to bring the meetings into the city. Bradford is a UNESCO City of Film, and we're here to celebrate our love for a TV series and film franchise, so it just seemed logical to hold meetings here.” says Erica. “You don't have to be a super-geek to enjoy our meetings, or even much of a Trekkie. We're open to anyone who loves sci-fi, and we try our best to include everyone who comes along."

Leeds Bradford Starfleet runs monthly meetings on Saturdays at Glyde House, starting from tomorrow at 1pm. It will run quizzes, games and challenges - and dressing up as a favourite character is encouraged.

“We have Starfleet Admirals, Klingons, and people in TARDIS hoodies," says Clare. "I'm personally longing for the day someone walks through the door dressed as Darth Vader, or a Tribble!”
