CHILDREN and families from a Girlington school came together for the first in a series of events celebrating the different nationalities that make up their community.

The celebrations started with an afternoon recognising St William’s Primary School’s links with the Slovakian community.

Andrew Bastable, deputy head teacher, said: “We are lucky enough to have children in our school with roots and family backgrounds in over 20 countries around the world. To see the sense of pride and achievement on children’s faces when they were telling us about Slovakia and what it means to be Slovakian was superb.

“The fantastic turnout and support from so many parents and family members keen to celebrate and learn about Slovakia has been so positive and affirming in what we are trying to achieve at school.”

Future events will celebrate the cultures of children from Poland and Pakistan.
