Parents are celebrating after Bradford Council agreed to adopt and repair a road outside a school.

Campaigners fear the poor state of Moor Park Road is a threat to the safety of pupils at Bradford Moor Primary School.

A petition calling for the Council to act gained 275 signatures, and campaigners are welcoming the Council’s decision which will see the road resurfaced, new pavements, improved street lighting and drainage.

The work is expected to cost £50,000.

Assistant head teacher, Andrew Wallwork said: “Everybody is delighted the road is going to be adopted and made into a safe access for children and parents.

“The school opened in 1985 and the road has deteriorated since. It became dangerous because cars were having to avoid the potholes as well as concentrating on avoiding parents, children and pushchairs.”

He was particularly pleased the scheme will see pavements being introduced on both sides of the road.

Councillor Ghazanfer Khaliq, who backed the campaign, said: “This is a victory for common sense. Fifty thousand pounds is a lot of money but if it saves a life or serious injury then it’s money well spent.

“Now I’m looking forward to seeing the work start as a matter of urgency.”

In May this year the Telegraph & Argus reported the parents’ plight, detailing how close one mother came to seeing three of her children run over outside the school when a driver lost control of a car due to hitting a pothole.
