A Conservative MP has hit out at Labour's "arrogance" after it said it was robbed of the Shipley seat at the last general Election.

Speaking at the Labour party conference in Bournemouth, its deputy leader Harriet Harman said the party was "robbed" of its seat previously held by Chris Leslie. She told delegates the party faithful in West Yorkshire should "settle the score" and reclaim what was theirs at the next election.

Miss Harman said: "I hope that you will settle the old score whereby we were robbed of a Labour member of parliament for Shipley. I think there will be a few scores settled at the next general election."

Tory Shipley MP Philip Davies said the newly-appointed deputy leader showed "arrogance" in her plea as the voters made their choice on election night.

He said: "More people voted Conservative than Labour in Shipley and that was that. Harriet Harman is entering into what I believe to the limits of arrogance. Labour have not been robbed of anything. It is about democracy. People chose who they want to vote for.

"She should accept the result gracefully as Chris did on the night. Whatever happens on election night people accept it as it is up to voters to decide."

Miss Harman also issued a rallying call on the first evening of the conference at a Yorkshire and Humber meet and greet event.

She said she hoped every single "precious" Labour MP in Yorkshire is re-elected next time the country goes to the polls.

She said: "We all know that what we have got to do now is we have got to organise, mobilise, campaign, inspire and be ready."

Mr Davies won the Shipley seat in the 2005 election with a 422 majority.

Mr Leslie has been reported as throwing his hat into the ring for the safe Hull East seat held by former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott who announced he will be stepping down at the next election.
