A Bradford woman's dream of taking English language learning into cyberspace has earned her a regional business nomination.

Language teacher Bernadette Wall, 52, launched gapfillers.co.uk in 2006 to make English easier to learn for foreigners.

Based in the Gumption Centre in Glydegate, Bradford, her website is up for Best E Learning Initiative in a regional awards scheme for digital companies.

Hundreds of subscribers have signed up to the site, including major companies such as Shell and Unilever.

Gapfillers also provides an online social network for those learning English as a second language. It enables users to improve their language skills in only ten minutes a day.

Aiming initially at the corporate and education sector, the e-learning site provides language training for companies relocating staff as well as families and students.

Bernadette lived in Indonesia for ten years working as a language coach teaching English as a second language.

She said: "There's an estimated two billion potential English language learners worldwide and with our downloads, podcasts, RSS feeds and text messages, anyone can learn at their own pace, wherever they are.

"People can improve their language skills and widen their vocabulary and seize the opportunity to learn."

Bernadette aims to make the website an essential daily tool for businesses and students.

She said: "I want Gapfillers to be the MySpace and Facebook of the language world."

Gapfillers is the only online language programme to update its training materials daily and deliver them to subscribers on the move.

It keeps learners in touch with each other, which helps to develop communication skills and confidence.

Bernadette said: "Taking English language into cyberspace is the first stage in bringing language learning out of the classroom and into the real world."

Bernadette said: "We have high hopes to make the website an essential daily tool for businesses and students and are overjoyed to be recognised for leading this new movement in the language industry."

Gapfillers is pitched against the best of the best' of Yorkshire and Humber's thriving digital industry at the Yorkshire Insider digital awards ceremony at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on Thursday, May 8. Gapfillers has previously caught the attention of nationwide judging panels having been shortlisted for the British Council Innovations Awards 2007 and Venturefest York 2007.
