Wharfedale Harriers were out in strength for the Bronte Way Fell Race – the day after taking the team prize at the Great Whernside Fell Race.

After his decisive victory in the Withins Skyline the previous week, Bingley Harriers’ Ian Holmes was in winning form again at the ninth Great Whernside fell race from Kettlewell, organised by clubmate Pete Jebb.

Ian Holmes (Bingley Harriers) stormed to victory, on the moors above Haworth, in the 21st Withins Skyline.

Having established an early lead over the rest of the field, Katie Walsh (Holmfirth) and Mary Wilkinson (Bingley Harriers) ran in tandem for the whole of the women’s senior race in the West Yorkshire Cross-Country League at Grange Park, Wetherby on Saturday.

In what has been a lean weekend for local races, runners from the Airedale and Wharfedale area have travelled further afield to find competitions.

Promising young athletes Joseph Crossfield of Halifax and Tilly Melechi of Ilkley achieved their goals in the punishing Beefy’s Nab fell race on Sunday.

Shaun Dimelow knocked 29 seconds off the 2011 winning time of Quentin Lewis (Baildon Runners) as he took the 28th Horsforth 10K title well clear in 33min 59sec.

The first sign of spring in the off-road running calendar is the series of three Bunny Runs, organised by the Woodhead family on Penistone Hill above Haworth.

It was a busy weekend for off-road racing which was packed with coincidences: Two events, two fine winners, two course records, both athletes finishing more than five minutes ahead of their nearest rivals and beating their own previous records.

It was a rewarding day for the Airedale Athletics Partnership at the Epilepsy Action Bradford 10K last Sunday. Sixty-seven partnerhip athletes competed and over 40 club members provided marshal support around the course.
